‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’: Sweet, Unexpected, Mysterious & Captivating
A Court of Thorns and Roses has me eagerly awaiting more works from Sarah J. Maas because the book is a masterpiece!
This novel is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, which is why I picked up A Court of Thorns and Roses in the first place. I love reading different, more modern versions of classic stories, and this work left a deep impression on me.
A Court of Thorns and Roses opens with the story of Feyre (a huntress) and how her life will change when she is imprisoned in her enemy's world, she is stunned and desperate. Because of that, A Court of Thorns and Roses paints a love/hate relationship between the two main characters, Feyre and Tamlin - her captor.
First, I want to talk about the characters in the story. Tamlin, through his mystery and outbursts, reminds me of the Opera Ghost in The Phantom of the Opera, which I loved. And Feyre, who is talented and independent, but not as adventurous and extreme as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, is another thing I like about this work. Feyre is also quite hesitant and naive but does not tend to become a princess in dangerous situations. She represents an everyday teenage girl.
I also want to talk about the romance part of A Court of Thorns and Roses, which I think is a bit inappropriate and a bit too straightforward for a Young Adults (YA) work. However, I would still recommend A Court of Thorns and Roses to slightly older readers than YA teen readers. I also didn’t like the plot of the girl falling in love with her enemy who is completely mysterious and other things…I keep comparing Feyre and Tamlin’s relationship to Bella and Edward in Twilight, but maybe that’s just my weird way of thinking.
Other than that, the plot of A Court of Thorns and Roses is fantastic and Sarah put a lot of thought into it. It’s sweet, suspenseful, and at times mysterious and engaging.
Sarah J. Maas’ writing is equally excellent and A Court of Thorns and Roses makes me want to pick up her Throne of Glass series right away. Either way, if you’re a slightly older teen, this book won’t disappoint!
